Courtice: Jerusalem lodge No. 31 A.F.&A.M. bantam boys baseball team split a pair of games at Pennfound Park by identical 12 - 10 scores.
Playing Durham Regional Police from Oshawa on a night where the weather was perfect for a baseball game with no winds and the sun tucked behind evening clouds, the boys in blue started slowly, falling behind 9 - 4 after two innings and the mercy rule applied in the top half of the second. Play was a bit sloppy as a three game winning streak was on the line and Jerusalem Lodge made it harder for themselves by not being able to make the simple play and get the third out. Shaking off the damage of a six run inning by the visitors in the second, the boys in blue tightened up in the third to trail by a score of 10 - 6 after three complete.
Jeff Walsh handed the ball to Jordan Gaskin in the fourth, having pitched well enough to keep the game close until the boys in blue could find their rhythm. Gaskin shut the doors on the visitors posting no runs scored against in the fourth and fifth innings. Will Zega lead off the bottom half of the fourth with a double. Zega scored on a Walsh triple. The bench really came alive when the next batter, Chris Singh, walked to get on base. Singh promptly stole second base and both came home on Casey Elliott's 2 - RBI single. Two batters later and two out, the boys in blue continued their aggressive play. Andrew Lynch stole second after getting on with a ground rule force out at Second, removing Elliott and scored on Dylan Burnham's RBI single. Zach Lintner followed with a deep to centre double leaving himself and Burnham in scoring position for Scott Pynn. Pynn delivered with a 2 - RBI blast of his own to deep centre and with six runs scored, the inning ended with Pynn standing on second base to the cheers of his team-mates and fans in attendance.
Jerusalem Lodge and Oshawa both failed to score in the fifth and the game was called due to curfew with the boy's in blue holding a 12 - 10 advantage.
Two nights later, Jerusalem Lodge No. 31 was the visitor against Courtice Funeral Chapel at Pennfound Park. Under brilliant early evening sunshine and ideal conditions for a ball game, the boys in blue dropped their wining ways losing 12 - 10.
In the bottom of the first and again in the bottom of the second, the boys in blue wished they only needed two outs to end the inning. Playing smart defensive ball for 2 / 3 of an inning doesn't quite get you there as that third out proved to be too elusive. Three runs scored in the first and four runs scored in the second, each after two outs, to leave Courtice Funeral Chapel holding a 7 - 2 lead after two innings. Time really dragged as play was sloppy on both sides. Jerusalem Lodge managed to climb back into the game to bring the score closer but were never able to threaten with a rally, closing out the game after only four innings due to curfew and on the short end of the score, leaving the boy's in blue season record at 7 wins and 4 losses.
Next home game is Thursday July 14th at Pennfound Park, 6:30 pm start.
